Obama: My mistakes.....

  We need more than a storyteller

On a TV news show recently, Charlie Rose asked Barack Obama if he could share any mistakes he had made in his presidency. His answer: "When I think about what we've done well and what we haven't done well, the mistake of my first term was thinking this job was just about getting the policy right. That's important, but the nature of this office is to also to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism, especially during tough times."

Our president's answer to this question struck me like an arrow in the heart because it demonstrates how little he understands the American people and the depths of our collective concerns for our nation's economy — let alone what needs to be done to begin its healing.

I must confess that I remain stunned and almost speechless every time I relive his words. Is he kidding? Does he really not understand that the American people don't want or need an inspiring storyteller to lead our nation? We don't even need to like the person.

What most Americans understand from what they see and experience every day is a nation in deep economic trouble. Americans know their family's futures have never been more threatened. What most Americans crave and desperately need is a leader who is practical and pragmatic and who has a proven track record of private-sector experiences, a proven understanding of capitalism and the skills and wisdom to actually collaborate with the opposite party to find the best solutions for all Americans. What America really needs is effective leadership, not better stories.

When Mr. Obama was elected, I was wary of him being qualified to lead our nation during these difficult times. He simply had no practical work experience of any kind to prepare him to effectively deal with the huge economic challenges our nation faces.

The main driver of our nation's economy is a powerful symbiotic relationship between workers (jobs) who provide the labor for businesses in exchange for wages, and then use these earnings for purchases from businesses in order to continuously provide the primary fuel for the economy. This is a complicated interdependent relationship in which both businesses and labor must be equally sustainable in order for the overall economy to flourish for the maximum benefits of our citizenry.

Today, it seems clear we should never have rationally trusted this complicated economy's leadership to an amateur who had never held a job within, let alone led, a single capitalist organization. He is smart, has a wonderful smile, can do a good job of delivering a teleprompter speech, is a great evangelical-style speaker on the stump, and is really great at promising hope and change. Do these characteristics alone qualify someone to lead the largest and most complex economy in the world, especially when that economy has been growing steadily weaker over the past 50 or 60 years?

Mr. Obama has been telling a story with his words and actions. His story has been consistent throughout his term — just blame others! Blame the Bush administration. Blame the Republicans. Then blame the continuation of our problems on global economic challenges faced by other countries. His only notable actions, passing economic stimulus and health care reform laws, in reality only assured those most rewarded were the same folks who were allowed to write the legislation: the powerful special interests!

He has repeatedly shown he didn't and doesn't have a clue about what actions to take. Unfortunately, he has further enhanced his own deficits by surrounding himself with czars and advisers who are much like him: perhaps great at social theory but woefully short on practical experience.

Mr. Obama knows he has shared his story with Americans. And, as the first debate on Oct. 3 painfully demonstrated for him and his supporters, his results just can't be spun enough to inspire us. Americans have enough common sense to know that results are what count, and they simply have not been delivered.

If the best he has to offer is his belief that he failed to come up with an inspirational story — and we re-elect him — our nation is truly up the proverbial creek without a paddle. Amateur hour simply hasn't worked, and it won't in the future.

For those of you who will ask what evidence we have that Mitt Romney is the right person, the short answer is that we don't know for sure. However, we only have two choices, and we do know President Obama's past actions and results speak much more eloquently than any story he can deliver.

It seems to me that we have a lot more to risk going forward if we don't give Mitt a chance. This must not come down to what's best for Democrats or Republicans. What is desperately needed is what's best for all Americans.

A good salesperson might need a better story. True leaders don't worry about the story — they just lead and allow the results to speak for themselves.

American Unemployment down to 7.8%..baloney!

Unemployment down to 7.8%

Many Americans will take this single number as a sign the economy is indeed recovering, and worse, many will make their presidential voting decision accordingly. The media has for months been repeating the story about no president since FDR being re-elected with a rate above 8%. To these folks, this means the corollary must also be true...if the rate falls below 8%, the president should be re-elected.

I wonder how even the most casual observer can reconcile this number to the truth they observe daily about our overall sick economy and continuing lack of job creation. As long as the process used to determine the unemployment rate excludes from the equation those who have given up the job search, this rate is meaningless. No matter what the rate shows, the overall labor force participation rate for the past months remains the lowest it has been since 1981. No matter what this rate can be spun to suggest, we still have between 23 and 25 million Americans and their families either totally unemployed or horribly

underemployed. In addition, wages and purchasing power have been declining in real terms since the middle 1960s, while the fundamental prices of most staples needed to survive just keep climbing.

While the methodology used to calculate the unemployment rate hasn't changed, the dynamics underlying our unemployment reality have. No matter how it's spun, the brutal truth is our economy is not even close to creating enough new jobs to even keep up with population growth...let alone bring significant job relief for our nation. American families, especially from the middle class and below, have never struggled harder for survival. Meanwhile, instead of trying to work together for real solutions, the two parties are in an equally brutal struggle for power. The Democrats and the liberal media are spinning this story to support their party's candidate, while the Republicans and their media partners are doing the exact same thing.

My advice is to continue to trust your own instincts for this particular election. Firing all incumbents is my personal recommendation as a reasonable start for taking back control of our nation from both parties. Since Mr. Obama is an incumbent we need to start with him.

Grrrr! That's how I feel every time I see the political spinning of the current unemployment report! Both sides have their lips moving...you know what it means.

I'm sure it won't be long before the rate is down to zero. Of course that won't change the number of citizens without jobs...but the rate will sure sound attractive won't it??

When a politician's lips are moving ...

We rapidly approach an important decision point for voters. The presidential race appears to be too close to call, no matter what you read, see or hear from any source. It seems two critical tipping points will be the debates and overall voter turnout, and most pundits suggest the latter is especially so for Barack Obama.

The spin doctors for both parties are out in full force, trying every trick in the book to influence your decision. The political machines and the super PACs are spending obscene amounts of money. No matter how you receive information, you are going to be supplied with biased answers. 

There's an old joke: How do you know when a politician is lying? Answer: His lips are moving. This is more significant today than it has ever been because, using every possible form of media, the truth-spinning process has expanded and improved dramatically. Political campaign machines launder every tidbit of information, using polling survey results, to ensure that information shared matches up precisely with what intended target audiences want to hear.

The number of political polling organizations, with trustworthy-sounding names, has also dramatically expanded. How can a voter decide which ones to believe? With a bit of research, you will learn some are indeed unbiased, but even a cursory examination will show others are clearly aimed to favor one or the other party. We then hear news show hosts telling us how this or that poll is more or less biased than others. It remind me of the uncomfortable feeling we get in our gut when someone tells us "And I'm not

lying" just before telling us something.

We see multiple news stories saying the economy is improving. Then we see stories saying just the opposite. These usually contain just enough valid information to allow them to barely pass the smell test. But, if evaluated

more carefully, with a skeptical perspective, the biased influence intent clearly shows.

For example, on Sept. 25, a front-page story appeared in this newspaper from The Associated Press, headlined: "Americans are more confident in the economy than they have been in seven months." I read it carefully because I wanted to see in which parallel universe this writer lived. Clearly it is not from anywhere in the America I'm familiar with. The writer went on to say, just in case the intended reader was too stupid to get the story's intention, "This is an encouraging sign for President Barack Obama." 

The story quoted a person living in Washington, D.C. (surprise) and working for the government (surprise) saying: "Well, my 401(k) has improved, and housing prices around here are improving, and I feel like things are stabilizing." Even this person stated, in the conclusion of the story, that he was deferring his voting decision. Maybe, I thought, he is just waiting to hear from his bureaucratic bosses about who to support based on the likely winner. After all, it's not considered a good fundamental career practice to back a loser in D.C. The story concluded with: "Polling evidence indicates that Obama leads Romney in several important swing states."

Two days later, with a completely opposite conclusion, a news release from a conservative group called Americans for Limited Government stated: "The economy is continuing to falter as 2nd Quarter GDP revised downward to

1.3 percent by the government's Commerce Department." This release went on: "Suspicion existed indicating the previous report had been manipulated on purpose to inflate the results." The concluding sentence was: "Today's

report shows that the Obama economy continues to weaken, which is terrible news for those who were hoping to enter the holiday season with a new job and renewed hope."

These are only two examples of the many stories being shown by mainstream media that go beyond simple reporting and are aimed instead toward voter influence.

We are observing the continuation of decades of politics as usual by both sides, which has gotten our nation into such deep trouble. Change your voter registration to independent. 

Vote against all incumbents for the next few election cycles. 

No spin needed here. We all know D.C. has

become so corrupted that the only logical choice is to fire the lot and start over. Unlike the NFL, the replacements cannot be any worse.

Most important of all: When you read/hear/see anything pertaining to any campaign from any source, always try to imagine the message is being delivered by a real politician. That way, as the imaginary politician's lips are moving, you will be reminded that it's a lot of politically spun BS!

America's entitlements crash coming

The impending entitlements crash

The U.S. entitlement train, with 78 million baby boomers aboard, is hurtling along at ever-increasing speed toward a crash which will cause massive disappointment and suffering. The boomers expectations of receiving their long-promised Social Security and Medicare benefits, will inevitably crash into the impenetrable barrier of our future economic reality. While the crash cannot be avoided, it doesn't have to be sudden and violent. It could instead be a slower, less painful series of minor collisions, if our elected leaders and their followers from both parties would immediately find the courage and wisdom to acknowledge this certain reality.

I've seen estimates that place this debt as high as $100 trillion. This future crash all began back to the mid -1960s when our government decided it needed more revenues than were coming in from taxes. Our lawmakers spotted the current and future pots of gold of the Social Security and Medicare trust funds, and just couldn't avoid the temptation of "borrowing" some of this idle money to use for current needs. They came up with the idea of borrowing/spending the trust fund cash now and replacing it with a special version of government bonds. These bonds are special because they cannot be purchased by anyone outside of the U.S government. This means these special bonds, which will require future additional federal revenues to redeem, have replaced real cash with additional future debts. They are simply IOUs from one branch of government to another. The problem is the only sources of revenues available to pay back this borrowing will require some combination of extra tax revenues, additional borrowing, or massive spending cuts.

This is how the pending crash scenario was born and what is meant by unfunded entitlements. In this case, as with most others, our politicians have not demonstrated any concerns about long-term issues beyond their own election cycle. The powerful special interests who fund their campaigns also have short-term appetites. As a result, our elected haven't worried about the future of we the people or our children. They must assume future generations of politicians will find viable solutions. The phrase kicking the can down the road comes to mind!

What generations of our elected in their corrupted DC environment should have seen, but clearly chose to ignore, was the projected shrinkage in our population growth also beginning in the early 1960s. This additional fact added to others helped create the perfect storm of unfunded entitlements we face today. We simply have too many future retirees depending on too few tax-paying workers, combined with severely depleted trust funds, on top of our accumulated massive federal debts, continued deficit spending, and a weakened economy.

In the 1950's, the U.S. birthrate (births per family) which stood at 3.8, has steadily declined since, and today is half of what it was back then. Of interest, every developed nation in the world has experienced the exact same shrinking birth rate phenomena, and most are even worse than the U.S. All are also facing the exact same entitlement scenarios. It's interesting how the leaders of most of these nations were able to forecast their lower population growth beginning in the late 1970s, and then use immigration to supplement their work forces. In Europe they did so with legal work permits. In America our leaders chose to allow illegal immigration. Both are examples of short-term thinking, and both methods solved short term problems, but created other future ones with Muslims in Europe and Hispanics in America. Our lower birth rate will result in us having

fewer than two FICA paying workers per benefit-entitled retiree. Then think about all of this in the context of our politicians being completely unable to make even a small dent in our current debt and their continued deficit-spending.

Meanwhile, instead of uniting, we and our chosen party's leaders continue to just play the blame game toward those in the opposite party. Neither side has the courage to honestly confront these challenges. Nor will they tell the American people the truth about what will be required to prepare for the impending entitlements crash which will have unimaginable consequences for the boomers and our nation's future descendents.

It seems clear many of us are in a perpetual state of denial about this reality. This is shown by our continuing blind allegiance to our two broken parties who are both operating in the same corrupted system. As the old saying goes: "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely". We the people have ceded this absolute power to those we elect to represent us, by turning a blind eye to their actual performance for generations, and by re-electing incumbents over 90% of the time. Our elected don't respect our wishes and they certainly don't fear us. And so, the entitlement train hurtles down the track toward a certain catastrophic collision. We have nobody to blame but ourselves! Our leaders need to make tough choices, and if they all continue to listen only to the voices of the special interests...we will soon be finished as a nation!

Half of Americans pay no taxes

Half pay no income taxes

When I first heard this statement a couple of years ago, my initial feelings were of disbelief, quickly followed by anger. That began my search to determine the target for my anger!

Since then I have been repeatedly reminded of this statistic by the media, and far too many emails to even count. Clearly this must seem wrong and unfair to the rest of us who do pay our income taxes. However, the more I studied our economy and logically connected the facts, it became clear who the real culprits were.

Our federal personal income tax system came into existence in 1913. Since then our legislators have tweaked and changed the rules, called tax codes, many times. Both parties have continuously agreed we should have a progressive tax system. This simply means the more income one earns, the higher percentage of it should be paid in taxes. This undoubtedly resulted from our pragmatic leaders being guided by two simple fundamentals: 1. If you want real dough...collect it from those who have the most. And, 2. You can't get blood out of a turnip! So let's not forget almost none of these poorer Americans simply decided not to pay taxes...our lawmakers clearly made that decision for them with the structure of our tax codes.

Who are the non-tax-payers, and why don't they pay taxes? Let's begin by remembering we have close to 25 million American workers and their families either completely without work or terribly underemployed today. Also remember fully one half of the non-income tax payers have household incomes which fall below the official poverty line. Finally, wages have fallen in both real terms and purchasing power over the past several decades.

Do you think the vast majority of these poorer among us deliberately decided to become poor? Don't you think most would prefer to earn wages sufficient to allow them to pay income taxes? Do you think they take great pride in having to rely on public assistance to help keep their families fed, sheltered, and protected? Have you thought about all of the other government taxes they do pay which are actually regressive in nature, in other words, the less one earns the greater proportion goes to pay these other taxes. I'm referring to state income tax, federal payroll tax, sales tax, real estate tax, personal property tax, gasoline tax, excise tax, etc. Can you imagine how much money these folks would have left to provide for their families if income taxes were added to their burden?

I've heard some say these poorer folks just need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps? What if there are no bootstraps in our severely broken economy? Many of these poorer are among our least educated and are caught up in what's called generational poverty. With our current continuing recession, most cannot find a way to escape its pull any more than any of us can escape gravity. Should the more fortunate among us just say, too bad, we made it on our own and you can too?

We should all feel real anger and even shame, because America, in spite of our current economic woes, remains the wealthiest economy in the world by a huge margin. Yet almost half of our workers cannot make enough money to be able to afford to pay federal income taxes.

We must blame the collective leadership of both parties in Washington, DC. Over many decades our elected and appointed leaders have increasingly paid more and more attention to the short-term greed of those who can afford to buy their actions with money and votes. Our legislators have then spent incredible sums of our money in return. This was and is money we could not afford, and our leaders failed to foresee, or simply ignored, the long term consequences of these reckless actions. We, of course, are fully culpable because we just keep voting for the same party and incumbents, election after election...in spite of clear evidence of their collective malfeasance.

So, while it's wrong that so many can't pay income taxes, I hope you will no longer blame the poor, the wealthy, or a single political party. Since our leaders from both sides seem so unwilling to work together to find solutions, it doesn't look as if our economy, wages, and lack of jobs is going to improve much any time soon. When thinking about the plight of the less fortunate among us, the rest of us need to remember that old saying: "There, but for the grace of God, go I". Because the truth is, if not today, it just might be you or your loved ones in this situation in the near future.

More proof of corruption in DC

Is it the corn crop we should be worried about??

In a recent column I discussed the Midwestern drought and its negative impact on corn, and then, food and gasoline prices. I blamed our elected in Washington for collaborating with the corn industry to create the ethanol boondoggle in the first place. Tax payer subsidies to help build the ethanol distilleries and distribution systems, and the EPA "allowing" up to 15% ethanol in our gasoline, were all it took for our elected officials to once again enrich a specific industry and defraud we the people.

Now I learn about insurance against weather-related losses available for corn growers which covers 65 to 85% of lost income resulting from the drought. This initially didn't bother me much, after all, who among us doesn't buy insurance of all kinds...homeowners, life, health, accident, auto, etc. to protect against unforeseen losses.

My attitude changed when I saw an economist from Purdue University explaining corn insurance. He described it as insurance designed to protect corn farmers from most of their weather related losses...and the best part (his words) is nearly 60% of the premiums are paid by the federal government. Now why would our lawmakers do this? Why are tax payers providing a substantial portion of loss-protection insurance premiums for this one industry...especially one blessed with tax payer funded subsidies and special EPA rules? This same person then said the government just couldn't allow farming families to fail. Why not I wondered...what makes this industry, and make no mistake it is a very wealthy and powerful industry, so unique it has to be so favored? After all, most other businesses are allowed to prosper or fail on their own? And don't forget, American corn growing today is typified by huge corporate farms, not by the small family farms of the past.

Of course, the obvious answer is this giant industry has a powerful and effective lobby in Washington being aided by the elected lawmakers in the corn growing states. Together they collaborate to write and get passed the legislation needed to ensure the corn industry is protected and prospers...no matter what. Not surprisingly, this also results in incredible revenue opportunities for another powerful special interest group...the insurance industry. When two powerful special interests like these tango...they steal even more of our money to use for their joint benefits.

Do you wonder why those who raise cattle or other livestock can't get similar insurance? Don't worry, it's likely only a matter of time. Sooner or later, every significant industry will likely be buying similar insurance against losses. Oh, wait a minute, I almost forgot, some won't have to. We've already seen what happened in the financial and auto industries. The only thing missing there was the insurance industry missing out on their share of the loot because we paid for these bailouts directly!

Why can't our millions of small businesses in America, who are our main job creators, buy insurance against losses? You know the answer...because they can't manage to unify and raise enough money to pay for the lobbyists and bribery required.

In what parallel universe does it make sense to continue to say America has a free market capitalist economy? How can we even imagine this is true? Isn't it clear our nation's economy today is increasingly defined by deals made between the most powerful special interests and our elected lawmakers for their mutual benefits? The special interests get laws, regulations, tax loopholes, etc. to tilt the game in their favor, and the politicians. in return, receive financial support to fund their campaigns. We the people...we get the bill...or our future citizens will!

This is another example of why it should also be clear to all Americans...we don't have a revenue shortage...we have instead a government that is completely addicted to recklessly spending our money for any group or cause that will help keep our elected in power. Since the mid 1960's they have been plundering entitlement trust funds. As these begin to dry up, they started ratcheting up the scandalous borrowing that has left us $16 trillion in debt, and and still growing as we now borrow almost 40% of all federal spending. When all else fails...they induce the Fed to just print more money. Then today both sides simply stand back along with their party loyalists and point the finger of blame at each other. No attempts to collaborate to find the least/worst solutions...just more blame!

Instead of worrying about corn, we should be more concerned about our total "crop" of elected in Washington today. It's the drought in their collective personal integrity which has allowed the theft of our children's future. This is what we should be most worried about. Unlike the weather, which we can't change, we can easily use our ballot to change who we send to Washington. While our favorite party's Kool-Aid, likely sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, does taste good...are we hopelessly addicted? A friend of mine suggested my repeated cry to fire all of them reminded him how nature often burns an entire forest in order to bring in fresh new growth to sustain itself. I think that's exactly what we need to do with all of our elected...fire them and bring in fresh blood. How could it possibly be worse?

Romney vs. Obama

Obama vs. Romney: My Opinions

Recently in the Times-News, a Nicolas Kristof column began with a clever taunt to read the following quotes and guess which presidential candidate said each. My initial thought was...here comes a series of jabs at Mitt Romney. As expected, Kristof finished by asking "who is the real Mitt Romney?".

Kristof could have written a similar article about President Obama and his flip-flopping on campaign promises made while running for president in 2008. He could have written about his original positions on issues such as: same sex marriage, the debt ceiling, illegal immigration, NASA, the closing of Guantanamo Bay, military tribunals, unilateral military action (Libya), anti-missile defense for Europe, Bush tax cuts, the Patriot Act, lobbyists, and his promise for total transparency...to name just a few. All of those campaigning positions have been reversed or ignored since his election.

Mr. Romney, of course, has taken both sides of many issues too. The reality of primary campaigning requires a candidate to focus on the main task of winning their party's nomination before they can even think about actually competing against the opposing party's candidate. Campaign tactics are driven by the reality that both parties include voters with a wide range of differing personal beliefs which must be appealed to in order to win the nomination. Mistakes are immediately exposed and punished. Do you remember, for example, Newt Gingrich saying all Americans should be on Medicare, and then quickly rescinding his statement when voter backlash exploded? Most intelligent voters understand this gamesmanship is simply part of the "art" of politics. Can you even imagine how difficult this tight-rope is to walk? How often do you see any candidate consistently speak the truth as they see it? Ron Paul has tried for years and, while garnering a small loyal following, has failed to gain significant national support. With our current level of media "show" exposure and editorialization, it forces every answer to be laundered for political expediency. Prior to our own recent GOP congressional runoff election, LeRoy Goldman and I interviewed the two candidates, Vance Patterson and Mark Meadows. It quickly became apparent that both had much practice in responding to every question in ways which, while answering the question, were buffered to protect them from a possible fatal blunder. One of them even admitted the most difficult part of running was feeling forced to answer every question truthfully, but in ways which would appeal to the largest number of voters...and offend the fewest.

Both parties take endless polls to determine what their loyalists and on-the-fencers most want to hear...and then both candidates spew the words they have been instructed to say by their speech writers. I am not accusing them of being out and out liars. I am saying that they are mostly telling you what they think that you most want to hear...either positively about themselves, or negatively about their opponent.

In sharing which candidate I will vote for, I am not favoring one party over the other. Frankly, I sincerely believe that neither party is working to serve the best interests of the majority of Americans. However, as trite as it might sound, I think that we must once again answer the simple question that I first heard Ronald Reagan ask before the 1980 election; "are you better off than you were four years ago?" We must also honestly and realistically consider the experiences, qualifications, and values of our two presidential candidates regardless of party. Mr. Obama has almost zero (read none) working or leadership experience within any private-sector capitalistic enterprise. This has been repeatedly reflected in his decisions and performance. How could anyone realistically expect such a person to understand how to provide the needed leadership required to turn the largest economy in the world around? Mr. Romney, on the other hand, has demonstrated by experiences, and results that he understands what it takes to work successfully within a capitalistic economy. It is absolutely clear that Mr. Obama's promises of hope and change without him having the needed experience didn't and won't work. Is Mitt Romney the person we should trust with our nation's future during this particularly dark time? I don't know for sure, but I am certain that Mr. Obama's performance has proven that our nation cannot afford to risk our children's future in his hands any longer.

The United States, in spite of its many economic problems, remains the most powerful and envied nation in the world. Our nation can be saved, but it will take strong experienced leadership, significant mutual sacrifices, and collective political bargaining to patch up the good ship America and salvage the future for our generations to follow.

Fewer than a dozen states, including North Carolina, will determine whether the name of our next president is Obama or Romney. Since the majority of Democrats and Republicans will likely vote according to party affiliation in these swing states, the winner of this presidential election will most likely be determined by independent voters. If you are an independent voter and think Mr. Obama deserves to be re-elected, then by all means vote your conscience. If not, then vote for Mr. Romney.
